Principal Conductor

Central London

Orchestral jobs are listed for free thanks to our partnership with the Association of British Orchestras

Posted:
2nd May 2018
Organisation:
Sinfonia Tamesa
Closing Date:
22nd June 2018

Background

Sinfonia Tamesa is one of London's leading amateur symphony orchestras. Established in 2001, we perform three concerts a year in beautiful central London locations, featuring well-known classics alongside world premières and forgotten gems.

Having recently worked with a number of conductors on an ad hoc basis, Sinfonia Tamesa is now looking to appoint a Principal Conductor to help us maintain our high standards and continue our musical development.

The Role

  • Prepare the orchestra fully for 2-3 concerts per year, based on a rehearsal schedule of 7 rehearsals for each concert.
  • Collaborate with the orchestra on building a programme for the year ahead.
  • Retain and further develop the high standard of musicianship in this thriving, enthusiastic orchestra

Time commitment

Sinfonia Tamesa currently performs 3 concerts per season (usually Saturdays), and we anticipate at least 2 of these being conducted by the Principal Conductor.

We run 7 rehearsals for each concert: primarily on Wednesday evenings, and usually with an additional Monday prior to the concert, and a rehearsal on concert day. Your role as Principal Conductor will be to plan the content of the rehearsal schedule to make best use of players’ time, and to produce the best possible result at the concert itself.

Working with the orchestra’s Committee

Sinfonia Tamesa is run by a community of volunteers. The Committee is responsible for all logistical aspects of the rehearsals and concerts, including fixing players, booking venues and promoting concerts. The Committee is elected on an annual basis from players in the orchestra.

Repertoire for each concert is decided in collaboration between the conductor and the Committee. We try to maintain a balance between musical challenge, audience appeal, cost and logistics, and we draw as far as possible on ideas from the orchestra. Recent repertoire has included Bernstein, Tchaikovsky, Ibert and Mendelssohn. You can find a list of previous concerts on our website.

Term of Engagement

This is a fixed term engagement for 3 years, September 2019 - August 2022, subject to a probationary concert in Spring 2019 (currently scheduled for Sat 9 March).

The Principal Conductor will be expected to work as a freelance / self-employed contractor. Sinfonia Tamesa will not enter into any employer-employee relationship. The standard fee for each concert (including all rehearsals) is £900 ex. VAT.
