  • Head of Maths

    The Mathematics Department at Sydenham High is dynamic and strong. In a selective school, it is a pleasure to stimulate and inspire the pupils’ bright and alert minds, and Mathematics is a popular subject with strong numbers at A Level.

     

    In Year 7, girls are initially taught in form groups, moving into ability-based sets in the Spring Term. From Year 8 to Year 11 girls continue to be taught in ability-based sets. The Edexcel IGCSE examination is used and girls are entered at the higher level. The top sets also have the opportunity to study the AQA Level 2 Certificate in Further Mathematics and we have secured strong results in this qualification. Teaching is supported by Clevertouch screens in all Mathematics classrooms, and course specific-textbooks for IGCSE and A level. Students in all years have access to digital platforms to support their learning.

     

    Mathematics and Further Mathematics are both offered at A level. The Edexcel syllabus is followed and girls are able to study Pure Mathematics and a mixture of Mechanics and Statistics in both Years 12 and 13. Step and MAT training is offered each year for students applying to top university Maths courses.

    Ideally the candidate will show considerable initiative and be prepared to innovate both in the classroom and in the field. Staff are expected to be digitally literate and are encouraged to develop their personal digital skills.

     

    This is a full-time role, required for September 2024 or January 2025.

  • Teacher of English (part time)

    This is a rare and sought-after opportunity to join the highly-qualified, experienced and dynamic English Department at Sydenham High. Comprising a mixture of full-time and part-time members of staff, the Department passionately believes in the power of English literature to inspire and enable students to live vicariously through a wide range of literary experiences. We value the importance of pupils exploring a wealth of different perspectives and voices which reflect the diversity of our school community and city in which we live. Teachers in the Department employ a variety of creative teaching methods in order to encourage every girl to find success and joy in their studies.

     

    At GCSE, the girls take Edexcel GCSE English Language and English Literature but we have moved to iGCSE Edexcel for English Language from Year 10. At A Level our students study the Edexcel syllabus. Teaching is supported by Clevertouch screens and pupils bring their own devices across the school. Students in all years have access to digital platforms to support their learning and we operate a highly successful Google Classroom with resources and regular work posted for all.

    The Department run a range of clubs and societies including Literature Society, Creative Writing, Debating, Oxbridge extension and academic support clinics. Each year we enter clubs and competitions both as part of the GDST and nationally. Trips to the theatre and workshops further enrich our pupils in this popular subject. Ideally the candidate will show considerable initiative and be prepared to innovate both in the classroom and in the field.

     

    The preferred start date for this role is September 2024/ January 2025 and the role is part-time. A second subject would be beneficial, such as Drama. Please inform us of your second subject experience in your cover letter.

  • Teacher of PE (Maternity cover)

    Sport plays a key role in the delivery of outstanding holistic and co-curricular opportunities for our pupils. Alongside the teaching of GCSE and A Level PE, our Sports department are also committed to developing the most able and talented athletes through our High Performance Programme and Sports scholarships. We also offer an extremely wide range of sporting opportunities for our students to get involved in outside of their timetabled PE lessons including rowing, swimming, dance and even frisbee as part of our Mind, Body and Soul co-curricular programme.

     

    This is an excellent opportunity for a dynamic, enthusiastic PE Teacher to join this highly successful team. The successful applicant will have a genuine passion for sports and ideally experience in teaching PE from Key Stages 3-5. Most importantly, they will be an energetic and organised teacher who is prepared to make a real commitment to our extensive co-curricular programme.

  • Art Technician

    The successful candidate will join a dynamic, experienced and forward thinking Art department at Sydenham High School. The Art Technician is a key member of the team, supporting the smooth delivery of our Art curriculum.

     

    Pupils are encouraged to explore a range of processes including poetry and performance through to more traditional skills such as printmaking and oil painting. Pupils will create a range of ambitious outcomes throughout their creative journey within the school. We exhibit work regularly with weekly awards and pop up exhibitions and in the wider community such as shop fronts. We endeavour to find innovative ways celebrate pupils’ work such as fashion shows.

     

    The open minded nature of the department embraces new technical approaches and we are excited at the prospect of a new candidate broadening the already wide visual vocabulary in the department. We teach dry point printmaking, ceramics, oil painting and drawing.

     

    The Art department undertakes a residential study visit to St Ives annually and also runs various one day study visits which have included Kew Gardens, the Barbican Centre and Brighton. All members of the department are involved in delivering a fun and exciting co-curricular programme.

     

    This role ideally starts in June 2024. September 2024 is also possible.

  • Prep School Classroom Teacher

    The Prep School teaching team run an extensive range of clubs, learning interventions and each year we enter tournaments and competitions both as part of the GDST and nationally. Trips and workshops further enrich our pupils in their learning during their time in Prep School. All class teachers run clubs and lead a subject area within school. The candidate will show initiative, leadership and innovation both in the classroom and be highly motivated in their care and attention to detail as a Prep class teacher.
