About the job

Canterbury Cathedral is blessed with a large and flourishing Music Department under the leadership of the newly-appointed Director of Music Dr David Newsholme. Choral Evensong is sung every day of the week, and a Choral Eucharist is celebrated on Sundays. The Cathedral has a popular online presence: professional-standard webcasting technology is in place, allowing our music to reach a very large audience around the world.

The Cathedral is now seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and creative Assistant Director of Music, who will contribute to the Cathedral's mission and ministry by maintaining and developing standards of musical excellence, and who will become a part of the musical life of the Mother Church of the Anglican Communion.

This significant role will involve playing the organ at Cathedral services to the highest standard, and assisting with the direction of the Choir, the training of the Choristers and management of the Cathedral's musicians.  The successful candidate will participate in developing substantially the scope of the Cathedral's music programme, and our engagement with the local community and the wider artistic world.

Applications are invited from candidates who are excellent organists and keyboard players, who are proficient choir directors, comfortable working with children and adults and who have the ability to work entirely independently, taking responsibility when necessary.  The successful candidate will be committed to continuing personal music development at the highest level and will have a flexible approach to work.

The Application Pack can be found at: https://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/get-involved/employment   To apply, please upload a CV and Covering Letter to our online application system.   You should also submit a recording (preferably video) of something you have done which you feel best represents your musicianship and creativity.

Your application should reach us by: 12 December 2021.

Interviews: Friday 17 December and Saturday 18 December 2021.

If you would appreciate an informal conversation about the role please contact the Director of Music, Dr David Newsholme: david.newsholme@canterbury-cathedral.org.
