About the job

Christ’s Hospital wishes to appoint an outstanding and experienced musician and teacher for this high-profile position following the retirement of our current Band Director in August 2020. Whilst it plays many roles, Christ’s Hospital Band in its most common and public configuration is a 100-strong marching band in a traditional military style.

Based in Horsham, West Sussex, the School has pioneered social mobility and challenged social inequality to provide an unrivalled start in life for disadvantaged children for nearly five centuries. As economic and social inequality continue to grow in the UK, Christ’s Hospital’s mission is ever more relevant.

The Christ’s Hospital Band is one of the jewels in the crown of the school. Pupils march into lunch on six days a week accompanied by the Band (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday) or Bugle Band (Tuesday and Friday, currently directed by the Head of Brass). The 100-strong Band currently rehearses on Tuesday evenings and late morning on Sunday, in preparation both for the daily Band Parade and the plethora of other regular performances throughout the year: parades through the City of London on St Matthew’s Day (September) and as part of the Lord Mayor’s Show (November); the Band Concert (March); and Beating Retreat (June). This latter event – which sees the Band playing in various choreographed formations – is the culmination of the school year.

Salary is commensurate with experience and paid in accordance with the Christ’s Hospital Teachers’ Salary scale.

Full participation in the broader life of this busy boarding community is essential and accommodation on site may be available.

Closing date: 9am, Friday 21 February 2020.

Interview date: Wednesday 4 March 2020.
