About the job

Choral Scholars (alto/tenor) – Fixed term 1 September 2024 to 31 July 2025

Canterbury Cathedral is pleased to provide exciting opportunities for early career musicians, with Choral Scholarships available for tenor and/or alto singers.  A Choral Scholarship includes…

  • £ 8508.50
  • Free accommodation
  • Free singing tuition
  • Time and space to work on projects and development.

Choral Scholars sing as part of the Cathedral Choir (10 hours/week, Evensong each day (except Wednesday and Thursday), and at Sunday morning Eucharist, plus special services, and events), and offer an additional 7 hours/week to the Cathedral in further singing and supporting our musical work through outreach and administration.  Scholars have the rest of the week free to build their musical experience and work on professional projects, making the most of the many opportunities that Canterbury has to offer.  Canterbury is well connected to London with a fast train (55 minutes into St Pancras) and is an ideal place to begin a professional musical career.

The Director of Music, Dr David Newsholme, is happy to speak with interested candidates informally if they have questions before applying.  He can be contacted at music@canterbury-cathedral.org.

Application is via CV and covering letter, with prospective Choral Scholars also supplying a link to a YouTube video showing them singing a piece of their choice. We welcome applications from underrepresented groups. https://www.canterbury-cathedral.org/get-involved/work-with-us/

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 26 March 2024 and auditions/interviews are to be held on Tuesday 16 April 2024.
