About the job

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring, committed and enthusiastic Head of Strings to lead on String playing within the Music Department.

The successful candidate will also be expected to teach individual music lessons.

This is a two-day-a-week role.

The primary duties of the Head of Strings is to promote String playing across both the Lower and Upper Schools and to oversee the provision of Strings teaching, ensembles, and performance opportunities.

This is a great opportunity for a highly qualified and experienced individual, as the school seeks to build on the success of the school’s most recent ISI Inspection where Newton Prep was judged as ‘Excellent’ across the board.

The successful applicant will be an outstanding violin/viola teacher with a passion for inspiring young musicians to perform to the highest possible standard, as well as being an active performer in their own right.

The successful candidate will work closely with the school’s cello teacher and Director of Music to coordinate, lead and inspire ensemble work across every Key Stage.

The Music Department runs three string ensembles across the week and hosts strings masterclasses.

There are currently 37 pupils learning the violin, ranging from early beginners in Year 1 to pupils in Year 8, one of whom recently completed his Grade VII with a high distinction.

The Music Department is well resourced and, as such, there are limitless opportunities to support extra curricular activities through additional group coaching. There is the opportunity to help the school launch classroom instrumental lessons and recruit pupils from each year group to begin learning the violin, viola, cello or double bass.

The Head of Strings is recruited by the Head and Director of Music. They are responsible to the Head, via the Director of Music, in all matters relating to performance, ensembles, recruitment, pupil progress and the day-today management of their timetables.
