Worship, liturgy and music are central to the life of St Paul’s Cathedral. To this end, St Paul’s seeks to appoint a first-class musician to join their internationally renowned Music Programme.

As principal accompanist of the Cathedral Choir, you will play a varied and integral role, supporting the Director of Music in developing and maintaining a vision and house-style for performances of music in the Cathedral.

With responsibility for the care, maintenance, and development of the five Cathedral organs, you will act as a champion for the instruments and their profiles, planning and co-ordinating the annual Celebrity Organ Recital Series and having oversight of the Sunday Organ Recitals.

You will assist the Director of Music with the training and auditioning of the Choristers and Probationers and will conduct the Cathedral Choir on a weekly basis and when required.

You will line manage the Sub-Organist and Organ Scholar and support the work of the   Artistic Director of Choral Partnerships and help develop the work of the Organ Partnerships Programme. 

About you

The successful applicant will:

  • be a first-class organ recitalist and accompanist with a broad repertoire
  • be expert in liturgical improvisation, sight-reading and transposition
  • have proven ability as a choir trainer, including knowledge of vocal technique
  • have significant experience as a musician in a Cathedral, or a similar environment
  • have a good working knowledge of the liturgies of the Church of England
  • be expected to share in St Paul’s Cathedral’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults
