About the job

We are seeking to appoint an inspiring, committed and highly-skilled Piano Teacher to join a first-class Music Department from September 2021.

The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher with a passion for inspiring our youngest musicians to perform to the highest possible standard as well as being an active performer in their own right.

The appointment is in addition to the team of current VMTs. Currently, there are six piano teachers within the Music Department teaching over 100 pupils each week. The successful candidate(s) will take over at least two day’s teaching, equating to approximately fourteen hours. There is an appetite for learning at Newton Prep and there is every possibility of increasing pupil numbers through significant support and guidance from the Director of Music in targeting and encouraging new learners.

  • Inspiring musical performance of the highest quality through committed, skilled and outstanding one-to-one teaching.
  • Teaching to the individual needs, abilities and talents of each child, suggesting repertoire and adapting scores where necessary.
  • Identifying clear teaching objectives and learning outcomes, with appropriate challenge to deliver outstanding quality.
  • Assessing pupils’ progress, giving timely individual feedback to pupils and their parents as to how to progress further.
  • Ensuring that the School’s policies are reflected in daily practice.
  • Actively promoting and encouraging pupils’ participation in extra-curricular music, including solo recitals and school concerts.
  • Entering pupils for examinations through the Music and Drama Administrator as and when appropriate and preparing them to succeed.
  • Invoicing parents in a timely manner at the beginning of each new term.
  • Communicating with parents when necessary via the pupils’ practice notebooks and responding to parents’ queries and concerns as and when they arise in a professional and timely manner.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A relevant music qualification at degree level.
  • Experience in teaching the piano to pupils aged between 3-13, both boys and girls.
  • A unique approach to teaching the piano which is inspiring and is not based solely on exam repertoire.
  • Extensive performing experience in their own right.
  • A sound understanding of technique, particularly with regard to young players.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • An ability to work as part of a team.
  • An approachable and engaging manner.
  • An understanding of, and commitment to, safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.
  • Enhanced disclosure via the Disclosure and Barring Service, including a Barred List check.

To apply, an application form (obtained from the school’s website www.newtonprepschool.co.uk) should be completed and returned to the HR Department at hrassistant@newtonprep.co.uk. For further information, please contact 0207 720 4091 (Ext, 1255) or the above email address.

The successful candidate will be subject to child protection screening, including a DBS and Barred List check.

  • Initial interviews may take place on Zoom in the week beginning Monday 14th June, 2021.
  • Candidates invited to interview will be required to teach a lesson on the afternoon of Wednesday 23rd June, 2021.
