Singing Teacher (Maternity Cover)

About the job

Eton College is seeking to appoint an experienced and talented Singing Teacher to start in April 2020, subject to satisfactory pre-employment checks. Eton has an enviable tradition for singing and it remains a thriving part of school music making.  Responsibilities will be to teach and inspire singing in both classical and contemporary genres to boys across the 13-18 age range, encouraging technical and musical development. The successful applicant will also be expected to monitor, record and report on pupils’ progress; meet all administrative deadlines and attend events in which your pupils perform (when possible). 

This is a part-time position working approximately 6 hours per week. However, there is an element of flexibility required in the role, and the number of lessons taught may change on a termly basis. This is a fixed term position commencing at the start of the Summer term, in April 2020, providing maternity cover until the current post holder returns to work after maternity leave. The College are unable to guarantee exactly how long the contract will continue for, however this is unlikely to be any later than 31 December 2020.

Visiting Music Teachers are employees of Eton College and receive statutory holiday pay in addition to a generous hourly rate.

The Ideal Candidate

Skills and Competencies Required

To be successful in this role, the incumbent should:

• Have previous experience of teaching 13-18 year old boys
• Have expertise in dealing with the changing voice
• Be a ‘team’ player with ability to work flexibly as part of a diverse team
• Have exemplary written  communication skills
• Have excellent organisational and IT skills
• Have excellent oral communication skills, especially in relation to staff, students and parents
• Be positive, enthusiastic, flexible with a pro-active ‘can do’ attitude.
• Have the ability to adapt to changing situations
• Have the ability to work evenings and weekends by arrangement
• Show a proven commitment to professional development

They may also have:

• A diploma/professional teaching qualification
• Experience of preparing pupils for Oxbridge choral awards
• Experience of teaching in a range of musical styles including musical theatre
• Experience of supporting the work of choral directors
