About the job

The responsibilities of the post include, but are not limited to:

Organ

  • playing the organ at the daily Cathedral services when the Cathedral Choirs are in residence 
  • playing for special services, concerts and recordings 
  • managing the organ playing rota, in consultation with the Organist 
  • providing training and guidance to the Organ Scholars 
  • planning organ music for statutory and special services 
  • developing an outreach programme centred around the organ, designed to inform and engage potential students of the organ 
  • teaching a small number of organ students 
  • overseeing visits to the organ loft. 

Choral directing and training 

  • regular direction of the Cathedral Choir in rehearsals and services (significant opportunities may be offered to suitably experienced candidates) 
  • occasional direction/rehearsing of Frideswide Voices 
  • taking responsibility for the boy’s probationer training programme, and contributing to the girls’ probationer training 
  • supporting and advising the undergraduate director of the College Choir. 

Administration 

  • attending certain Cathedral meetings, as directed by the Organist 
  • responsibility for proof-reading the musical elements of Cathedral service papers 
  • responsibility for the planning of music for some special services, including weddings 
  • responsibility for the maintenance of the Cathedral organs, in consultation with the Organist and Operations Manager 
  • assisting with the recruitment of Organ Scholars and Academical Clerks 
  • overseeing the music library, the day-to-day running of which is managed by the Choir Librarian 
  • assisting with the management of the deputy list and monthly payroll 
  • assisting the Organist with project-based work, as required.
