Music is an integral part of the worship at Canterbury Cathedral, and great pride is taken in its performance. The Cathedral is blessed with a large and flourishing Music department that includes boy choristers, girl choristers, Choral Scholars and Lay Clerks, all under the leadership of the Director of Music, Dr David Newsholme. The Cathedral has a popular online presence: professional-standard webcasting technology is in place, allowing its music to reach a very large audience around the world. The choir also frequently performs at services of national and international significance which take place at the Cathedral, and participates regularly in television and radio broadcasts, concerts, tours and recordings.
Lay Clerks sing at Evensong on five or six days each week, and at Eucharist on Sunday mornings; they are required to sing at the major Christian festivals, including Christmas and Easter, and at the Feast of the Martyrdom of Thomas of Canterbury. Additionally, Lay Clerks take part in special services which take place at the Cathedral, and participate in recordings, broadcasts, and concerts given by the Choir.
A minimum monthly attendance rate of 85% is required. However, absence for the purpose of developing and sustaining a professional musical career, or for other professional commitments, may be permitted at the discretion of the Director of Music.
